I am thrilled to announce the inaugural issue of the Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science (JPIS),1 a remarkable new venture that coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Korean Academy of Periodontology (KAP).2 This milestone is not just a celebration of our past but also a bold step into a vibrant future for periodontal science.
Since its inception in 1960, KAP has been at the forefront of advancing periodontal science in South Korea. With the launch of our first official publication, the Journal of the Korean Academy of Periodontology (JKAP), in 1971, we established a vital platform for disseminating original research and clinical breakthroughs in our field.3 Over the years, we have built an impressive repository of knowledge, culminating in the rich contributions showcased in the 39th volume of JKAP, which features a diverse array of carefully curated manuscripts, including groundbreaking basic research, insightful clinical practice reports, and thorough literature reviews.
Today, KAP proudly boasts over 2,000 members who bring an energetic spirit to our community. Our two major annual congresses and numerous symposiums create fantastic opportunities for sharing the latest advancements in research and clinical practices. These vibrant gatherings often lead to exceptional presentations that are subsequently published in JKAP, further enhancing our collective understanding and methodologies in periodontal and implant science.
While we have achieved much to date, we also recognize a significant opportunity for growth. JKAP has primarily been published in Korean, which has limited its accessibility to a broader global audience eager to engage with this valuable content. To tackle this challenge, our editorial board convened for meaningful discussions last year, resulting in an exciting decision: to transform our existing publication into an English-language international journal, thus rebranding JKAP as JPIS in 2010.
JPIS is designed to foster international collaboration and communication in the fields of periodontal and implant science. We are committed to maintaining a robust peer-review system that upholds the integrity and rigor of every published work. Our goal is to present timely, high-quality research that offers valuable insights from both basic and clinical perspectives while inviting submissions from researchers and clinicians around the globe. We are excited to welcome impactful contributions from diverse fields of study!
In pursuit of our ambitious goals, we are enhancing our editorial infrastructure and manuscript management processes while fostering relationships with both professional and public stakeholders, in collaboration with a reputable publishing partner. This strategic effort aims to streamline our operations and amplify the overall quality and visibility of the journal.
Though it is still early to fully assess the impact of this transformation on the profile and readership of JPIS, one thing is clear: our future success will be deeply rooted in our shared commitment to scientific excellence and the meaningful exchange of knowledge across borders. This transformative journey is already proving rewarding, as you will see in our inaugural issue, which features six carefully selected articles that represent our dedication to high standards in research.
As we embark on this exciting new chapter, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to all KAP members and associated societies for your unwavering support and encouragement. Together, we are poised to push the boundaries of periodontal and implant science, embarking on a journey that will lead us beyond national borders and into a bright future.
