It is with great pleasure that I introduce Dental Perspectives on Biomedicine and Society: Editorial Pages, the culmination of a decade’s worth of incisive editorials that have distinguished Professor Taeil Kim as one of the most thoughtful voices in international dental scholarship. Over more than twenty years as a dedicated university professor and clinician in South Korea, he has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to rigorous research and compassionate patient care.
As both a cherished colleague and dear friend, I have witnessed his resilience through serious illness. Despite health setbacks in recent years, Professor Kim’s generosity of spirit and thoughtful consideration for colleagues and patients alike have only deepened my admiration. His tenure as Editor-in-Chief in one of the leading international dental journals has been marked by editorial essays that transcend conventional boundaries—provoking debate, challenging assumptions, and forging connections between dentistry, ethics, and society.
This volume, meticulously curated into five thematic sections—Ethics and Accountability; Health for Public; Pathways to Communication; Legacy and Milestones; and Collaboration with Engagement—expands upon the original editorials with additional reflections and contextual analyses. Each chapter invites readers to engage with critical issues, from the ethical dimensions of germline gene intervention to strategies for oral health equity and digital health ecosystems. The clarity of his prose, coupled with scholarly rigor and practical relevance, ensures that this collection will serve as an indispensable resource for practitioners, educators, policy-makers, and students alike.
By transforming his editorials—originally published in the Journal of Periodontal & Implant Science—into a cohesive monograph, Professor Kim reaffirms the vital role that dental professionals play as ethical stewards of both science and society. I congratulate him on achieving this significant milestone and trust that this book will inspire and inform a broad international audience for years to come.
